Next-Up Mentality

Jaiden Harrison - DII Daemen Basketball

In Division II basketball, roles can change in an instant. One game you might be in the starting lineup, the next you might be coming off the bench, or asked to step into a role you didn’t expect. For Jaiden Harrison, that’s where the real edge of the game shows up: being ready no matter what.

“Coach always talks about it, next man up,” Harrison said. “It’s not just a saying. It’s how you stay competitive as a team.”

The “next man up” mentality isn’t about waiting for your moment. It’s about staying prepared so your moment doesn’t catch you off guard. Injuries, foul trouble, fatigue, or just a bad night can shift everything. In those moments, the team doesn’t pause, it adapts.

Harrison says the biggest challenge is staying locked in even when your role isn’t consistent.

“You might not know when your number is going to be called,” he explained. “So you’ve got to prepare every day like it is.”

That mindset shows up in practice long before it shows up in games. It’s the extra reps after drills, staying focused during scout work, and pushing just as hard even when the spotlight isn’t on you.

What makes the mentality powerful is that it builds trust inside the locker room. Everyone knows that if their name is called, the next guy is ready.

“At the end of the day, it’s about the team,” Harrison said. “If someone goes down or struggles, the next guy has to step up without hesitation.”

Because in D2 basketball, success isn’t just about stars, it’s about readiness. And the teams that win are the ones where nobody’s surprised when their moment comes.
